My friends, if you noticed, I did not include the family names of the Souls mentioned in my previous posts. This comes from the awareness of the Church's practice when I offer petitions for masses. Most of the readers of offerings read only the deceased's first names. Family names are sometimes mentioned only during special masses offered for a specific deceased person.
Yesterday was Monday and I attended once more one of the afternoon masses for the Souls in Purgatory at our local cemetery chapel. Having attended the last mass at 5pm, the priest who celebrated the mass had time to address my inquiry about the deeper meaning why only the first names are being read during the offering of the petitions prior the the start of the masses. Mind you, this was also the first time I wanted to fully understand it. This Blog provided the necessity. Thanks to our Lord who guided me into making this Blog.
Fr. Silva, was kind enough in extending me his time to provide me the Church's viewpoint on the matter. He said that during baptism, we were baptized by our first time...and with this Sacrament, we became children of God and no longer of man, hence only the first name matters to God....as the family name is that of man. More so, when we, the living, members of the Militant Church, offer our prayers for a specific Soul, we know from our heart as to whom we are referring in the eyes of the Lord. The Lord in His unconditional love knows each Soul, thus, during the offering at the mass, only the first names need to be stated.
